The Danger Among Us

What worries me most about what this nation is going through

May 22, 2017 - 10:23 am

There is an ugly truth that is laid bare in the incredibly divisive atmosphere in the United States of America.  It is becoming increasingly apparent that the majority of the Republican Party, and a  good many of Donald Trump supporters will defend a very dangerous man until the bitter end of his Presidency.  I have never seen a group of people so willing to look away from a train wreck and the devastation it is exacting on our country.

Nothing I say will change the minds of the truly rabid followers. It’s not my job to tell you what to think, but if you see the lies, the threats, the abusive behavior towards staff, the press and the people and think it’s just politics, you are a part of the problem.

What’s most jarring about what has happened to this country is not that a Donald Trump would be elected President.  What is alarming is that supporters are willing to themselves abuse, attack and demean those they disagree with.  They will blindly look away from the mountain of evidence that proves what many people saw during the campaign- a man who is woefully unprepared intellectually, experientially and emotionally for the highest job in the land. They will ignore the mountain of evidence that he puts himself and Russia first.  He will denigrate our friends (Mexico, Canada, Germany) and praise dictators and and countries hostile to us. The Russians in the Oval Office the day after Comey was fired learned the real reason for the dismissal before Americans did.

When Barack Obama won the Presidency in 2008, I was thrilled.  At no time did I go on the air, or tell those who didn’t vote for him, that they were crybabies or snowflakes.  I didn’t laugh at them or call them names at all.  I understood that for him to succeed, he’d need to work for all of the American people.  With Trump as President, many of his supporters don’t even care what he does, or says or what policy positions he takes.  It’s just to ‘make a liberal’s head explode’ as I’ve heard from numerous Trump supporters.  In their mind, this is the time to laugh at or verbally abuse anyone who doesn’t support him.  I’ve had to block texts and block Facebook followers time and time again because there is such a lack of respect. They want me fired, they call me awful names or just swear at me because I have a different opinion.  In their world he will do no wrong.

The ugly truth is that this Presidency is a “Dead Presidency Walking”.  In my opinion, firing Comey will forever be known as the beginning of the end.  As the web untangles, a good portion of his people will have a lot of explaining to do.  Like coming down from the buzz of the previous night’s party, they’re going to realize how ridiculous and downright hurtful they have been.  I’ve heard of families torn apart by this.  Relationships severed.  No man or woman should make you hate someone you disagree with.  I don’t hate the President, I hate what he is doing to this country and it’s people.
