Luzerne County: Driving the Music To You

David Pedri, Luzerne County Manager, shares the details on a new summer concert series, on wheels.

Last summer, Luzerne County asked the question, "would people go down to the river for live music on a Friday night?"

On July 12, 2019, the question was answered with a resounding "yes," when thousands of residents congregated at Millennium Circle for the kickoff of the inaugural Rockin' the River Summer Concert Series.

At the conclusion of the series, I spoke with both Ted Wampole and Luzerne County Manager David Pedri about the overwhelmingly positive response to the concerts.  Wampole, the Executive Director of the Luzerne County Convention and Visitors Bureau, told me preliminary discussions had already begun regarding the 2020 Rockin' the River Summer Concert Series, with the goal of fine tuning the event to draw even larger crowds.

We all know what happened next.  The COVID-19 pandemic started, and all plans went out the window.

Yes, the 2020 Rockin' the River Summer Concert Series was canceled, but what was stopping them from creating, and planning a pandemic friendly series of music themed events? Nothing.  All they needed was the right idea.

On June 30, 2020 David Pedri called into my show (audio on this page) to talk about the just announced, Rockin' the County, which I think is best described as a drive-thru concert experience.  No, you don't have to drive.  The concert will come to you.

Rockin' the County will feature live bands performing on the back of a slowly moving flatbed truck. Think of it like a parade minus the floats, firetrucks, and twirling teams.  One flatbed. One band. One chance to see them before they drive by.  All you need to do is find a spot on the Rockin' the County route (of the week), have a seat, and wait for the music to come to you.

Rockin' the County, is being presented by DiscoverNEPA, and is brought to you by the Luzerne County Government and Visit Luzerne County. Rockin' the County kicks off on Friday, July 10th, in Wilkes-Barre and will be run every Friday through August 7th.  Each week, Rockin' the County will travel through different Luzerne County neighborhoods between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
