Luzerne County Election officials say  more than 55-thousand  voters have applied for mail-in ballots in the Nov. 3 general election so far.

That’s more than 25-percent  of the county’s more than  216-thousand  registered voters.

In the June primary, the county processed more than 53-thousand requests for mail-in ballots and ended up receiving 40-thousand returned ballots.

It was the first time voting by mail with no excuse or reason required was available  due to a bipartisan state law  passed last year.

Luzerne County plans to start mailing the ballots beginning Monday October 5th.
