It's Election Day. The polls open at 7am and remain open until 8pm. Some of the races to watch are the race for Mayor of Scranton. There is one Democrat and one Republican vying for the office along with 5 independents and one of those has launched a write in campaign. The seat opened when former Mayor Bill Courtright plead guilty to corruption charges and resigned earlier this year. In the city of Hazleton, incumbent Jeff Cusat faces challenger, local businessman Bob Yevack. Also in Lackawanna County in the race for Lackawanna County Commissioner Jerry Notarianni is the only incumbent in the running with three newcomers.

When voters in Scranton head to the polls today, they have a question on the ballot. Scranton School District officials are asking voters to consider going from the business privilege mercantile tax to a payroll tax. If they vote yes, the school district will then be allowed to consider it but the vote will not signal any changes right away. If the vote is yes, businesses would be taxes quarterly on payrolls instead of annually. The question is on the back of the ballot.

Pennsylvania's highest court is telling state elections officials not to tally or certify the results of a referendum on a victims' rights constitutional amendment. A divided Supreme Court upheld a lower-court ruling Monday and directed the Department of State not to count or certify Tuesday's results from Pennsylvania's 67 counties. The ballot question was put in limbo last week, when Commonwealth Court Judge Ellen Ceisler issued an injunction.

Election coverage on WILK begins after the polls close at 8pm.
