New Trial for Ex Luzerne County Judge

January 09, 2018 - 5:28 am

A decision handed down by a federal judge in Harrisburg yesterday will see former Luzerne County judge Mark Ciavarella back in a courtroom. The judge reversed three convictions and that will grant him a new trial at a time yet to be determined. The 67 year old will face trial on charges of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The remaining 9 charges will stand. Ciavarella had said his attorneys were ineffective during trial when the statute of limitations on the charges was not brought up to the jury during his trial. He is one of those serving time for what became known as the Kids for Cash case in 2011. He's served 6 of his 28 year sentence.
