Department of Corrections Resumes Normal Operations

September 10, 2018 - 11:37 am

The PA Department of Corrections today resumed normal operations at all state prisons following a 12-day lockdown, which began August 29, to address a growing drug crisis in its facilities that sickened more than 50 staff members and 33 inmates between May 31 and September 1. Toxicology results confirmed the presence of synthetic marijuana in multiple instances of staff exposure. Changes have been made to DOC processes including using a third-party vendor that will process all non-legal inmate mail, expanded use of body scanners and of drone detection software and capabilities among others.
