Columbus Day

October 09, 2017 - 9:28 am

Yesterday in Pittston, the statue of Christopher Columbus was rededicated during a ceremony. The statue was damaged when a vehicle struck it last December at the corner of Main Street and Kennedy Boulevard. Local officials, members of the Knights of Columbus and a large crowd of well wishers were on hand for yesterday's rededication. Meanwhile:  A movement to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day is gaining momentum. Los Angeles recently became the biggest city yet to stop honoring the Italian explorer. But the gesture outraged Italian-Americans. They say eliminating their festival of ethnic pride is culturally insensitive.
