Man pleads to voluntary manslaughter charges in slayings
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man convicted in one Pennsylvania slaying has now pleaded guilty to charges in the deaths of two other people.
Allegheny County prosecutors said jury selection was halted when 22-year-old Theodore Smedley pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of voluntary manslaughter and a firearms charge.
He was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison in the March 2014 deaths of 36-year-old Jamarow Trowery and 18-year-old Rashad Freeman.
That sentence will run consecutive to a 20- to 40-year term imposed earlier after he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the murder of 18-year-old Rasheed Strader.
Trowery and Freeman were found shot to death in a vehicle that crashed into the back of a church. Prosecutors initially said they intended to seek the death penalty but withdrew that motion last year.
