The death toll from a fire that swept through a Haitian children's home run by a Scranton-based nonprofit group has risen to 15 children.

A child-care worker at the home, told The Associated Press that she saw the children's bodies being carried out of the Orphanage of the Church of Bible Understanding outside Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.

A worker says the fire started last night as the orphanage had been using candles for light due to problems with its generator.

The Church of Bible Understanding based in Scranton lost accreditation for its homes beginning in November 2012 when inspectors faulted the group for overcrowding, unsanitary conditions and not having enough adequately trained staff.

The organization operates two homes for nearly 200 children in Haiti as part of a “Christian training program,” according to its most recent nonprofit organization filing. It has operated in Haiti since 1977.
